Masterclass: What type of leadership does the NHS need?

This session looks at how the NHS can engage staff and develop talent at all levels and what sort of leadership skills will staff need.

Wednesday 4 November 14:15 – 15:30 (75 minutes)

Strand: Staff engagement

Speaker: Beverly Alimo-Metcalfe (Professor of Leadership, University of Bradford School of Management)

The dramatic reduction in financial resources, combined with the increasing demands on its services, makes staff engagement an indisputable priority, with immediate implications for leadership. While there is a burgeoning literature showing a strong association between staff engagement and organisational success, it does not provide evidence of a causal link, nor details of the form of leadership proven to increase engagement. However, in one of the first studies of its kind, we can provide evidence that what we refer to as ‘engaging leadership’ does predict productivity, as well as high levels of morale and well-being in multi-professional teams in the NHS.
