Policy into Practice 

 

The NHS needs to implement new policies in areas, ranging from Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults to the NHS Pension scheme choice exercise, and ensure its practice is fully up to date with case law in areas from equality to TUPE.

Implementing the proposals for medical revalidation set out in Better, safer doctors is a major exercise f9.00

or the NHS. From Autumn 2009 all doctors who wish to practise medicine in the UK will require a Licence to Practise. Get the latest information on the issues and understand your responsibilities as an employer.

 

Speaking up

Wednesday 4 November 11.30 – 12.30 (1 hour)

The NHS is committed to ensuring that staff can speak up and raise concerns about patient safety. Some progress has been made, but the staff survey still shows areas of concern. Consider how to create a climate where concerns can be freely raised and speaking up helps to improve services.

 

Future for community services

The Transforming Community Services Programme sets out a major agenda of shifting care out of hospital and a range of new employment arrangements are being developed in PCT provider services. What models are being used and what lessons can be learned in dealing with emerging employment issues?

Scientists inform more than 80% of all clinical decisions and the scientific workforce is critical to delivering the vision set out in the Next Stage Review.  Professor Sue Hill, Chief Scientific Officer, will outline the future for the workforce and delegates will have the opportunity so see how roles will change to fit with future service delivery

The NHS is going through major organisational change, from the implementation of the Next Stage Review Care Pathways to community services shifting care outside of hospital. New types of healthcare organisation are emerging and world class commissioning is being implemented. Changing health policy will shape the working lives of staff. This is your chance to understand future policy directions and your part in their implementation.

Science is reshaping the NHS from telesurgery to genetic testing. What are the key scientific changes that will impact on the NHS over the next few years?Developments such as self care by patients, home-based care and genetic screening are already having an impact. How can the NHS make best use of emerging technologies and what challenges will they create?

Come along and find out what the NHS Pension Scheme Choice exercise is all about and why it’s of real strategic importance to the NHS.  Hear the learning outcomes from the early adopter sites and how they can help your organisation get prepared for meeting the full challenge posed by the Choice exercise commencing January 2010.

 

Caring for kids

The spotlight is on childrens services for many reasons. How could and should services develop to ensure there isn’t another Baby P incident? What does that mean for the workforce? This session looks at both the Child Health Strategy and what it proposes for the future of childrens services and how employers can strengthen their safeguarding arrangements.

 

Making the most of foundation trust freedoms

Thursday 5 November 10:30 – 11:30 (1 hour)

Explore how foundation trusts have been applying their freedoms to workforce thinking, covering issues such as varying national agreements and the implications of mergers and acquisitions activity on staff. There will also be an overview of findings from the FTN’s staff governor engagement project.

 

Vetting & Barring Scheme: working with new Independent Safeguarding Authority processes

Thursday 5 November 10:30 – 11:30 (1 hour)

The rollout of the new Vetting & Barring Scheme to safeguard children and vulnerable adults will be implemented from October 2009.  Along with the introduction of extended definitions of regulated activity, there is a new referral process which feeds into decisions about barring individuals from working in the NHS. This session will explain the new processes and therefore requires some existing knowledge of the scheme.
