The financial settlement for the NHS will be much tighter. The NHS needs to raise its productivity, and as workforce is the main running costs raising workforce, productivity will be a key challenge.

Challenging economic conditions and competing priorities present some major workforce challenges for the NHS. Get an understanding of the impact of the shift to a graduate nursing workforce and the ageing workforce. You’ll also consider how to boost the skills of current staff and better manage workforce demand and supply.

The NHS faces a major challenge to improve productivity and raise quality in a tighter financial environment. Existing best practice and evidence is needed to avoid short-term unsustainable solutions. Get an understanding of “lean thinking”, productivity metrics, flexible staffing and shared service provision from the leading practicioners in the field.

 

Appraisal and the KSF

Wednesday 4 November 11:30 – 12:45 (75 minutes)

The NHS is committed to the effective use of staff appraisals and the KSF is the cornerstone of the NHS approach to the development of skills and competencies. This session looks at how the KSF can more effectively support staff appraisals and meet the pledges made within the NHS Constitution. It also considers the KSF’s potential for supporting the provision of evidence required within continuing professional development.

Value Based Management is an evidence-based management technique designed to identify how to create organisational value. Find out how this technique is being applied in other sectors and in the NHS, how it can help improve the effectiveness of human resource functions and how to analyse data and make the most of human resource metrics.

Promoting and nurturing innovation is critical if the NHS is to continue to deliver high quality care for all, especially in the current financial climate.  The NHS Confederation’s SDO Network, will take you through the factors that help build a culture to nurture innovation and how that can deliver market advantage and business benefits.

Explore the vital role that information plays for patients with long-term conditions, and discover how information prescriptions have made a difference to patients and clinicians in a mental health trust. Find out about the workforce resources that NHS Employers has developed to support staff to deliver information prescriptions. 

 

Changing culture in public services: from ‘cannot be done’ to ‘can do’

The NHS needs to change some of its traditional culture but protect the unique value it brings to our society. What can it learn from other organisations that have implemented major cultural change? This session looks at how public sector organisations that have changed to be more business and customer-orientated have achieved this transformation.

The majority of hospitals and health systems around the world struggle to manage both their human talent and their working relationships with physicians and other partners.  In US evidence on best practice in setting expectations ,managers articulate extremely clear priorities and expectations and remove barriers for their staff.

 

Healthier and happier: the Boorman health and well-being review

Thursday 5 November 10:30 – 11:30 (1 hour)

Supporting and improving the health and well-being of the workforce is essential if the NHS is to meet the challenges of delivering high quality care without excessive costs. This review highlights that the NHS loses 10.3 million working days each year due to sickness absence alone.  It will show for the first time clear links between workforce well-being and key measures such as patient satisfaction and trust performance.
