Human resource professionals need to be aware of the legal framework for employment policy and how it applies to their organisations. Get up to date on new legislation and case law developments across a range of key issues and put your questions to employment law specialists during this in-depth session.

 

Negotiating optimum deals and relationship building

Wednesday 4 November 09:30 – 11:00 (90 minutes)

The NHS is becoming increasingly reliant on good negotiating skills as patient care provision evolves to ensure quality, and responsiveness and savings are being delivered. Delegates will take away insights into what works well and why, plus tips for immediate and significant enhancement of their negotiation skills.

 

Delivering apprenticeships in the NHS

Wednesday 4 November 11:30 – 12:45 (75 minutes)

The expansion of the apprenticeships programme is a key part of the Government’s skills agenda and the health sector is expected to deliver an extra 5000 new apprenticeships during 2009/10. How can apprenticeships work in the NHS? What are the benefits for employers? Learn from a case study from the NHS and hear about the support and funding available to help employers who want to offer apprenticeships. 

 

Masterclass: People management and leadership in challenging times

Wednesday 4 November 11:30 – 12:45 (75 minutes)

How can human resources professionals ensure that, as we face challenging times, leaders provide the direction and support needed to ensure high staff morale, high quality patient care and high levels of patient satisfaction? What must leaders do in challenging times and what is the role of team work? Drawing on the latest research from Aston University, this session will show how HR leaders and HR practices can make a profound difference to clinical outcomes and huge efficiencies in NHS costs.

 

Stigma, discrimination and employment:  NHS good practice and contribution to  PSA 16

Wednesday 4 November 11:30 – 12:30 (1 hour)

Learn from good practice NHS organisations have developed to reduce stigma and discrimination and deliver the cross government target PSA 16. Find out what NHS Employers is doing to support employers and take back tools to help  increase  employment opportunities for adults in contact with secondary mental health services.

 

Equality Act – all for one and one for all

Wednesday 4 November 13:30 – 14:30 (1 hour)
This session will allow delegates to hear from and question three of the senior architects of the proposed new equality legislation. As well as hearing about the main proposals in the new Equality Act, delegates will be able to discuss and debate the main implications of these new provisions in terms of both workforce and service delivery issues.

 

Reducing violence at work

Wednesday 4 November 13:30 – 14:30 (1 hour)

This year, new tools have been provided to help protect lone workers. This session looks at the difficulties in protecting lone workers from violence and aggression and at how both employers and employees, working together, can ensure that the risks associated with lone working can be reduced.

 

Volunteers and volunteering

Wednesday 4 November 14:45 – 15:45 (1 hour)

This session will discuss the Department of Health's new Volunteering Strategy, which is being developed in co-operation with a wide range of voluntary sector organisations. It highlights the importance of volunteers to the service and patients and will also launch the new Volunteers and Volunteering in the NHS advice package which has been produced to support it.

 

Coping with the crisis

Thursday 5 November 10:30 – 11:30 (1 hour)

The NHS faces the greatest financial challenge for a generation. NHS managers need to balance conflicting demands and competing priorities in a complex environment. What can we learn from other organisations in managing change, diversity of cultures and organisational values?

 

Leadership for equality

Thursday 5 November 10:30 – 11:30 (1 hour)
This session will focus on the under-representation of black and minority ethnic staff at senior levels of the NHS. Delegates will hear about emerging good practice from key practitioners in this field and debate why this under-representation persists. In addition, the session will highlight the role of leadership in tackling this issue and explore some potential solutions.

 

Tackling bullying

Thursday 5 November 10:30 – 11:30 (1 hour)

The session will present feedback from a pilot being undertaken in the Newcastle area by the Deanery and 7 trusts (Acute, Mental Health, Primary Care) to identify the causes of bullying in the workplace and to address them.  The session will include feedback on implementation and what it was like to be involved from two of the trusts involved.
