Greg is the national employer side chair of the NHS Staff Council and a member of its executive team. He is passionate about staff motivation across the NHS and the effect that has on the quality of patient care.
Greg was appointed an executive director of NHS Devon in 2007, having been interim director for 6 months. His role in Devon is broad, covering the full range of HR, Workforce and OD priorities across the Commissioner and its arms-length provider. Greg is also the executive responsible for delivering the Workforce stream of the ‘Devon Health and Social Care Transformation Programme’ 2009 - 2014. This requires his leadership of the HR directors across the Devon health economy to deliver the strategic shift in workforce required to manage the effect of the current economic climate through to 2014.
Greg is also the executive commissioner for Devon’s prison healthcare contracts and has been the Responsible Officer for independent contractor performance across Devon since 2007.
Previously, he was Associate Director of Human Resources (Workforce) for NHS South West, having held the same role in the previous South West Peninsula SHA. During this time, he was the NHS South West national cluster lead for the HR strategic and operational delivery of the Commissioning a Patient-led NHS changes. Greg started his NHS career at West Gloucestershire PCT, having joined the NHS from the private sector via the national NHS Gateway to Leadership programme.
After his first degree, he was commissioned as an army officer at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, and served with the Adjutant General’s Corps (HR / Education), both in the UK and abroad. Additionally, Greg spent eight years in international private banking and human resource management roles, based in the City of London with both Coutts & Co and Citicorp Group.
Greg is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD, a qualified teacher, and holds various financial and investment analysis qualifications. He has held a number of senior HR leadership positions across the public and private sectors.
