Following pre-registration nursing and midwifery training, Jan developed an interest in health promotion and public health and went on to complete health visitor training in 1992. She qualified as a community practice teacher in 1998 and subsequently completed an MA Education at the University of Reading.

In 2003, she took up a part time post as a lecturer in education across health and social care at Reading, whilst continuing to work in primary care as a practice educator. She then worked as Education and Training mangager at Slough PCT for a year before taking up her current post of Professional Adviser, Education at the NMC in March 2007.

Jan’s work at the NMC initially focussed on education in practice, specifically the implementation of NMC Standards to support learning and assessment in practice, across the UK. She has been involved in the NMC Review of Pre-registration nursing education from the outset and is lead the workstream on teaching, learning and assessment in phase two of the project.
