The Government has announced that there will be no pay increase for consultants, GPs, dentists and senior managers in the NHS in England.
Doctors consulting

Following the reports of the Senior Salaries Review Body (SSRB) and Doctors' and Dentists' Review Body (DDRB), the Government has announced that:

  • Very senior managers (VSM) in the NHS, covered by the VSM pay framework, will not receive a pay increase.
  • In relation to employed doctors and dentists, there will be no pay award for consultants.
  • All other employed doctors and dentists in England will receive 1 per cent from 1 April 2010.
  • A pay supplement of 5 per cent will be introduced for foundation year house officer 1 posts that attract only basic pay.
  • For general medical and dental practitioners net earnings will not increase.

NHS Employers' response

Gill Bellord, NHS Employers director for core membership services, said: "We welcome pay restraint for consultants in the NHS. The evidence we gave to the Doctors' and Dentists' Review Body called for constraint as increases would not be helpful in the context of such difficult economic times.

"In addition, we understand the Government's decision not to increase the pay of board level senior managers. It is reasonable that senior staff in the NHS should lead by example and demonstrate their commitment to meeting the current financial challenges."
