New shortage occupation list comes into effect

15/06/2009
The UK Border Agency's new shortage occupation list for international recruitment has come into effect for vacancies advertised from 15 June 2009.

The UK Border Agency has published the list after the Government accepted the recommendations in the Migration Advisory Committee's first partial review of the shortage occupation lists for the UK and Scotland, submitted in April 2009.

The main change for NHS employers is the inclusion of some non-consultant, non-training medical posts. Employers should use the new list for any job vacancies advertised on or after 15 June 2009. They will need to use the list published in November 2008 for vacancies advertised before this date.

The new list, which applies to tier 2 of the points-based system, is available on page 126 of the PDF document titled Skilled, shortage, sensible: First review of the recommended shortage occupation lists for the UK and Scotland: Spring 2009, which can be downloaded from the UKBA website.

Further information can be found on our shortage occupation list page.
