The Stonewall Index is regarded as the definitive list of Britain's most gay-friendly workplaces. Sussex Partnership was placed 20th in the 2011 index, and 58th in 2010.

Chief executive Lisa Rodrigues said: "The Stonewall Index is nationally recognised. I am very proud that Sussex Partnership is ranked as one of the top four places in the country, for people who are lesbian, gay or bisexual.

"This is an achievement of the highest order and a testament to our commitment to equality. We have earned this by the efforts of our front-line staff, our professional leaders and our in-house equality and human rights team.

"Our high ranking is not only about our staff. Our approach to equality includes our services and the way we support those who use them, so this ranking is also an important recognition of the quality of our services."

Scott Durairaj is the trust’s professional head of equality, diversity and human rights. He said: "This steady rise up the index is no accident. We have established a culture of equality and human rights at Sussex Partnership by running effective staff support networks, by training and mentoring, and by having the robust scrutiny and governance in place to drive forward our success by measuring outcomes.

We have planned ahead to meet the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 but more important we believe in equality because that is the right thing to do".

Other NHS organisations ranked in the Stonewall Top 100 index are:
