Stakeholder analysis

You can use this tool to assess your stakeholders’ views on the objectives that you are trying to achieve.  Your stakeholder mapping will help you to meet your stakeholders’ needs, get the maximum benefit from your work and identify any potential issues.

At this stage you should already have the commitment of your chief executive, human resources director and at least a small group of other senior managers in your organisation. This is a good base on which to build a wider commitment.

This page has tools to help you:

Identifying your stakeholders

You can download a version of the stakeholder mapping tool that you can edit for your own use. Start by identifying your core group of stakeholders (your inner circle) and, once they are on board, you need to identify who the other key stakeholders are (the interested parties) for your work.

  • Who would support it?
  • Who is likely to oppose it?
  • Who in the organisation has the ability and/or the position to influence change?

Mapping stakeholder views

Once you have identified the key stakeholders for your project, map them on the table below and indicate whether the stakeholder has:

  • a positive view of your equality and diversity objectives (+)
  • a negative view (-)
  • or is neutral (0).

This will help you identify advocates and potential issues that you may need to address.

Once identified, you may need to develop individual strategies for different groups or individuals for example:

  • If a highly influential group or individual is against a particular objective, you will need to find ways to make it more acceptable to them.  Take time to understand their views - they may be right.
  • If a highly influential group/individual is really positive, they will be good ally and will help you to achieve your objectives - seek their advice and support.
