Your equality and diversity objectives need to support your organisation’s strategic objectives and what the organisation wants to achieve. You might expect to set between four and eight objectives.
Your objectives should be identified by your organisation to reflect your local needs, whilst also taking into account the national workforce agenda such as the NHS Constitution and staff pledges.

External influences
You also need to consider external influences.
External political, economic, social and technological issues and influences are also important. A PEST analysis that considers all these factors, provides a useful model for organisations to identify these external influences.
You can now identify the key issues arising from all the above using a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis.
In summary, your objectives will then be determined from the following:
- the overall strategic objectives of the organisation
- results of the baseline assessment
- the workforce profile and the community the organisation serves
concerns of stakeholders
- the wider policy agenda on diversity
- PEST analysis
- SWOT analysis.
Once you have identified your broad objectives and outcomes, you need to set them out in detail.
