SWOT analysis

The aim of a SWOT analysis is to identify the extent to which the strengths and weaknesses of an organisation enable it to respond to external opportunities and threats and what it needs to do to create an inclusive organisation.

Strengths

You will be seeking to identify the strengths so you can build on these. For example, the organisation may be particularly strong in its communication with staff or in its development and implementation of policy.

Weaknesses

You will identify weaknesses that need to be overcome. For example, managers might not be trained in cultural competency or the baseline assessment may have identified a low level of confidence amongst staff to express concerns.

Opportunities

Each of the key influences identified in the PEST analysis can be categorised as an opportunity or …

Threats

…… as a threat.  Some may be both.

You are then ready to relate the organisation’s strengths and weaknesses to the key external influences. This will highlight those areas that need action and help determine your objectives.
