South Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust won the best employer, voted by its managers.
Jointly run by the Health Service Journal and Nursing Times, the awards are based on Ipsos MORI research with staff and were celebrated today at a special lunch at the London Hilton.
The awards were open to NHS and independent providers in the acute, primary care, mental health and ambulance sectors and NHS organisations were strongly represented, with 11 featuring in the top 20.
Joint acting director of NHS Employers Alastair Henderson said: “These employers recognise the importance of staff engagement and are finding new ways to listen to and respond to staff.”

Runner up and top acute trust: Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Best employer, voted by managers, and top mental health trust: South Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
Top primary care trust: NHS Islington, London
Top healthcare employer in the field of work-life balance (under 100 employees): Connect Physical Health, Cramlington, Northumberland
Top healthcare employer in the field of performance management and staff development (under 100 employees): The Endeavour Practice, Middlesborough
The awards recognised good employment practice through a robust process and also provide healthcare organisations with an opportunity to benchmark their employment practice against other organisations in the same sector and in the overall healthcare market.
