Our new toolkit Engaging your staff: the NHS staff engagement resource provides you with the information and tools you need to help increase staff engagement in your organisation.
It contains a wide range of information from an introduction to staff engagement, practical working examples, evidence on the benefits that you can achieve from having an engaged workforce and access to a series of tools and resources.
The information will be useful across all staff groups, from clinicians, HR managers and communications teams to senior managers.
The click-and-go guide enables you to find the information you want on specific topics quickly and directly. The toolkit contains four sections:
- Introducing staff engagement in the NHS
- The benefits of staff engagement, the evidence
- How to embed staff engagement in the NHS
- Tips, tools and resources to help improve staff engagement.
Help us review the toolkit
We launched our online staff engagement toolkit last year and to ensure that it continues to meet your needs, we are now carrying out a review of its content and usability. It would be really helpful if you could spare a few minutes to complete our online survey. It should only take you a few minutes. |
The toolkit was developed jointly with the Department of Health and tested at a series of regional workshops held in the first half of 2011. Over 400 HR managers were involved in testing the toolkit to ensure that it met their needs. A summary of the workshops is available, together with copies of the presentations from the events.

The staff engagement star

The staff engagement star is a representation of the process of staff engagement. It is based on discussion with staff and also analysis of linkages found in the staff survey.
For example, there appears to be clear links between high levels of staff engagement and improved health and well-being. Good leadership and management at all levels has been shown to be closely linked to staff engagement.
It represents a positive cycle of engagement so that improvement in any one area should contribute to overall progress.
The star shows the main areas that help foster the engagement of staff. In addition, in the online toolkit, we show how staff engagement can contribute to improved patient care and financial benefits for the organisation.
As well as using the star in the toolkit, you can also download an A4 poster of the staff engagement star.
Feedback
To ensure that the toolkit continues to meet your needs, we welcome feedback on its usability and content. If you could spare a few minutes to complete our quick survey that would be appreciated. You can also email comments directly to staffengagement@nhsemployers.org.
Toolkit launch
The toolkit was launched at the NHS Confederation annual conference and exhibition on 6 July 2011. It was launched by Jan Sobieraj, interim director-general of workforce for the NHS and social care from the Department of Health and Dean Royles, director of the NHS Employers organisation.
