The Department of Health has published a new staff engagement Insight which shows that increasing and effective staff engagement can help produce improvements in HR measures such as workforce productivity. Find out more about the Insight report.
Harnessing the power of employee communication.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) produced a practical toolkit for CIPD members in September 2010 which sets out how to develop a strategic approach to employee communications. Six key themes are covered in the report and cover issues such as the importance of senior leadership involvement and measurement and evaluation. Creating an engaged workforce.
This two year research project from the Kingston Employee Engagement Consortium Project, analysed levels of engagement across eight different organisations. It offers strategies for engagement and insights into the outcomes of engagement. The identity of the participating organisations is confidential but they are generally well known names from the NHS, government departments, local government and the private sector. The Engaging Manager and latest thinking on staff engagement.
The Institute for Employment Studies have produced two reports on staff engagement issues. The Engaging Manager looks at the crucial role that a line manager plays in staff engagement and what managers can do to inspire and engage their teams to perform well.
The second report, Employee Engagement, a review of current thinking, looks at why staff engagement is important and looks at the work of the institute to date.
Driving service improvement.
Professor Cary L Cooper from Lancaster University Management School, has discussed the significance of employee engagement and well-being to driving service improvement in an article for Public Service magazine. Read the article.
The association between the NHS staff survey results and patient experience.
The King's Fund have analysed associations between NHS staff survey results and inpatient experience in 166 acute and specialist trusts in England. Find out more about the research.

International research.
NHS Employers hosted two events for senior NHS staff in July 2009 where the leading staff engagement consultants OC Tanner presented the latest international research on the subject. See the summary of the information provided at the events.
MacLeod Review published.
The MacLeod review recognises work in the NHS as at the forefront of effective employeee engagement among organisations from all sectors. The review uses examples from the NHS in its recommendations for effective employee engagement to help inspire good practice and promote debate among other organisations.
