Staff engagement in the NHS: some local experience

16/11/2010
Our Briefing published in November 2010, sets out some tips on how to engage your staff to meet the current challenges facing the NHS as well as providing practical examples of trusts who have implemented effective staff engagement schemes locally.

group of delegatesStaff engagement can help employers meet the challenges of reducing costs, raising productivity and implementing the organisational changes arising from the NHS White Paper.

High levels of staff engagement have been proven to link to a range of positive outcomes, including for patients and to better health and well-being for staff.

The Briefing provides case studies from organisations that have successfully engaged with their staff through a variety of methods and describes the benefits that they have achieved as a result.

It looks at examples of good practice from:

Barnet and Chase Farm Hospital Trust who implemented a Big Conversation project.

York Hospital, who used staff engagement as part of their efficiency savings programme.

St George's Hospital who used staff engagement to improve customer service.

The Briefing also looks at staff engagement from the primary care trust perspective with case studies from Islington PCT and Brent PCT.

It focuses on improving engagement through greater involvement of staff in decision making as set out in the NHS Constitution staff pledges.
