Mental ill health will affect one in four people at some point in their working lives. Employment rates for people with a mental health condition are low even though the majority want to work. However, many people can and do work while managing a mental health condition and there are many examples of positive effects on individuals and organisational productivity.

Launched in March 2010 by NHS Employers, Open your mind aims to raise awareness of the benefits to patients, staff and organisations of employing and retaining staff with mental health conditions while supporting employers with guidance and good practice. It has been developed collaboratively with the NHS Confederation Mental Health Network and National Mental Health Development Unit and is endorsed by Unison and Time to Change.
