Nursing workforce

Nursing forms the largest part of the workforce. It is diverse and spans all parts of the health sector. The volumes of staff involved creates challenges for employers when looking at workforce and service plans but its size and broad base of skill also provides huge opportunities to change the way patient care is delivered.

Nurse smilingThe requirements of employers described in the 2011/12 Operating Framework  and the proposals outlined in the Health and Social Care Bill set a challenging scene for employers, both now and the immediate future years.

To succeed in delivering high quality patient care in a tight financial climate requires more than small scale innovation and creativity in service delivery. Although these are important elements of any change programme, employers will need to think about whole scale re-profiling of the workforce to meet the changes needed to service delivery plans and within the financial budget available.

Our work programme

Our programme focuses on several aspects of nursing and education including:

  •  the change in pre registration nurse education
  •  the importance and value of preceptorship
  • using the career framework to enhance local workforce development and plans.

Our Briefing Preparing for Change: implementing the new pre-registration nursing standards, ’ published to accompany the NMC Standards for pre registration nurse education provides a framework for employers to think about  how the future workforce is trained to be fit for purpose but also how these standards provide a lever to change the way services can be delivered and the workforce re-profiled to enhance patient care.
