Stonewall's Healthcare Equality Index

27 / 3 / 2013

The Stonewall Healthcare Equality Index is a tool for health organisations to benchmark and track their progress on equality for their lesbian, gay and bisexual patients and communities.

2013 is the first year of the Stonewall Healthcare Equality Index, and will act as a baseline for health organisations to build on in future years.

This indicator is different to the national Stonewall Workplace Equality Index that was launched in 2005 and is published every January. As a result, health and social care organisations were asked to apply to this separately which specifically looked at the progress on equality for their lesbian, gay and bisexual patients and communities they serve.

As part of the application progress, these organisations were asked to provide further evidence on progress in a wide range of areas including Policy and Practice, Training, Engagement, Health promotion, Data collection and workplace equality.

In total, 32 health and social care organisations entered, and the top ten consists of a cross reference of NHS organisations, including mental health trusts, acute trusts, ambulance trusts, social enterprise organisations and community services.  The list of Top Ten can be found below.

1. Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
2. Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust
3. London Ambulance Service NHS Trust
4. St Andrews Healthcare Charitable Trust
5. Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust
6. Mersey Care NHS Trust
7. Barts Health NHS Trust
8. Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust
9. Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust
10. County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust

Congratulations to Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust who come first and have set the benchmark to beat. The organisation is already one of our Personal, Fair and Diverse Ambassador trusts, and are committed to taking further action to embed the values of PFD into their organisation and share their case study in engaging ways.

NHS Employers are also pleased to see Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust and Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust in the Top Ten, well done. Both these organisations are part of our E&D Partners programme, which sets out to progress and develop equality performance and share good practice from the wider NHS.
