JE enables jobs to be matched to national job profiles, or allows trusts to evaluate jobs locally, to determine in which Agenda for Change pay band a post should sit.
The Job Evaluation Group
The JE system is overseen by the Job Evaluation Group (JEG), which is a national technical sub-group of the NHS Staff Council. The Group ensures that the JE scheme is fit-for-purpose and provides on-going national advice to organisations, to support local implementation of JE.
The JEG's members cover representatives from NHS organisations - including NHS Employers - the four UK health departments and the NHS trade unions.
The NHS Job Evaluation (JE) Handbook
The JEG is also responsible for producing the NHS JE Handbook that is the comprehensive guide for organisations on job evaluation. The Group has published an updated third edition of the Handbook, with a supporting paper outlining what's new in this edition and top tips for organisations on JE.
The Handbook now covers areas such as mainstreaming JE and resolving blocked matching and the evaluation of jobs. It also includes details on JE linked to the merger and reconfiguration of heath service organisations, weighting and scoring, band ranges and how to use job profiles.
NHS Employers role on JE
Alongside our JEG role, we also maintain the national job profiles and work with SHAs, providing advice on a range of areas including banding issues and mainstreaming job evaluation. In turn, SHAs support trusts on Agenda for Change, including JE.
