Junior doctors' scoping report

17/12/2012
The Department of Health has published NHS Employers' scoping report on the efficacy of the junior doctors' contract.

NHS Employers carried out the scoping exercise in response to a request from the Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration (DDRB).

The current contract was introduced 12 years ago and the report concludes that it no longer works effectively for junior doctors or their employers.

Commenting in a media statement, Dean Royles said:

"Junior doctors work most effectively when they are able to focus on the quality of care and the wellbeing of patients, and on their personal development rather than the rigid shift patterns that have become the norm."

Dean Royles also welcomed the recommendations in the review of clinical excellence awards, published today by the Office of Manpower Economics.
