Andy Burnham named as health secretary |
The NHS Confederation said Andy Burnham was an excellent choice as the new Secretary of State for Health, in response to his appointment last week. Mr Burnham was named as health secretary in a Cabinet reshuffle and following Alan Johnson’s move to the Home Office. The new health secretary will face some major challenges as finances are squeezed and NHS Employers, alongside the NHS Confederation, looks forward to working closely with him to ensure that the NHS remains a service we are all proud of. The role of the nurse – join the discussion |

It poses a number of significant questions and encourages employers to respond through our online questionnaire. Your feedback will help us to represent your views in the policy debate and to influence the formulation of frameworks. Hard copies of the document are being sent to every trust over the coming week. Download the document and contribute to the discussion on our nursing web pages.

Medical revalidation explained |
Our new briefing, Better, safer doctors: implementing medical revalidation, explains the key elements of the process of revalidation, including the introduction of the Licence to Practise and relicensing and recertification. From autumn 2009, all doctors who wish to practise medicine in the UK will require a Licence to Practise. This is the first practical step in introducing the revalidation system. Identifying and affirming that all doctors are keeping their knowledge up to date and providing safe patient care will strengthen professional regulation and enhance service quality. For more details visit our medical revalidation web page.

FOI requests: NHS Confederation report |
A new report from the NHS Confederation says a clear process for dealing with Freedom of Information (FOI) requests can save NHS organisations time, energy and money. NHS organisations should be aware that the Freedom of Information Act applies to everyone in that organisation and the issue of transparency and accountability is an important one for all NHS staff. Many organisations currently have a good system in place to effectively deal with requests and we encourage them to build on that good work. See the NHS Confederation’s latest news item for more details.
