I wanted to let you know as a matter of urgency that the BMA has just announced the dates of proposed industrial action for junior doctors.
The BMA has said that action will begin with an emergency care-only model, which would see junior doctors provide the same level of service that happens in their given specialty, hospital or GP practice on Christmas Day:
- Emergency care only — from 8am Tuesday 1 December to 8am Wednesday 2 December
The industrial action would then be escalated to a full walk-out by junior doctors:
- Full walk out — from 8am to 5pm, Tuesday 8 December
- Full walk out — from 8am to 5pm, Wednesday 16 December
A full walk-out, with no emergency care being provided by junior doctors taking action, will have a huge impact on patient care. We are obviously extremely disappointed that the BMA has chosen to take this approach rather than return to the table to continue with negotiations.
The outcome of the vote will not be known until the BMA ballot closes on 18 November, but I know that you will want to review your contingency plans as soon as possible in light of today’s announcement.
Please share this information with your medical directors as you work together to minimise the impact of this industrial action on your patients.
Information to help your contingency planning can be found on our industrial action web pages, which we will continue to review and expand over the coming days to help you prepare for this potential period of industrial action.
I will continue to keep you updated as this develops and we will be working on additional resources to support you, but if there is anything else we can do to help your preparations feel free to contact me at email@example.com
