Press release: NHS Employers' response to Healthcare Commission report on NHS trusts' compliance with race relations law18 Aug 2006 Carol Baxter, head of equality and diversity at NHS Employers said: 'These findings clearly show that there is a lot of work to be done to ensure that trusts are fully compliant with race relations legislation. We are confident though that trusts are fit to meet this challenge. Race relations is high on the agendas of over 300 trusts that have signed up to our Positively Diverse programme which requires them to have board level commitment to equality and diversity principles and to having policies in place to enforce them. We know that many trusts are in the process of re-visiting how they meet equality and diversity legislation as a number of significant pieces of law, affecting age, disability and gender, will be coming into effect over the coming months. Many employers are choosing to incorporate the requirements of all this legislation into one over-arching single equality scheme which will be clearer for the public. Our team works with equality and diversity leads at local level to help them to understand and meet legislative requirements and provides trusts with tools such as templates and models to help them to comply.'
