Press release: Nurse takes lead role in improving equality issues in NHS04 May 2005 NHS Employers has appointed Professor Carol Baxter as its new head of equality and diversity. Professor Baxter came to the UK from Jamaica in 1970 to train as a nurse, midwife, health visitor and finally as a health promotion specialist. Since then she has held a number of senior positions in the NHS and higher education sectors. Most recently she has been on secondment to the equality and diversity team at the Department of Health from Middlesex University, where she was Professor of Nursing and Head of the Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Research and Development. "I strongly believe that equality and diversity should be central to everything the NHS does," said Prof Baxter. "The NHS is about caring and those who care must be given every support and opportunity to fulfil their potential. NHS Employers will work hard in supporting NHS organisations to excel as places where all staff, whatever their differences, feel valued and have a fair and equitable quality of working life, where we accept the difference between individuals and value the benefits that diversity brings."
