Press release: Joint press release with NHS Employers and British Dental Association: Agreement reached on SAS contract proposals24 Nov 2006 The British Medical Association, the British Dental Association and NHS Employers have today jointly agreed proposals for a new contract for staff grade and associate specialist (SAS) doctors and dentists. SAS doctors and dentists will be balloted on whether to accept these proposals in the New Year, subject to approval from the four UK Health Departments and the Government's Public Sector Pay Committee. Heather Lawrence, Chief Executive at Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare and chair of the NHS Employers negotiating team said: "We are delighted that we now have an agreement on the new contract for SAS doctors. These proposals are the results of many months of work on both sides, which at times have been challenging. We believe that the proposals will result in significant improvement to the terms and conditions of SAS doctors and will in turn be of benefit to patients." Dr Ashok Pathak, Chairman of the Negotiating team for the BMA Staff and Associate Specialists Committee, said: "The BMA is preparing a series of road shows for early next year and putting together information to explain the new contract proposals to SAS doctors. We are not telling SAS doctors how to vote, it will be up to them to read the information provided and decide whether to vote for or against accepting the new contract." Keith Altman, Chair of the British Dental Association's Central Committee for Hospital Dental Services, said: "The British Dental Association advises dentists to attend the road shows that are being organised to explain these proposals. It is for individual dentists to decide whether to vote in favour or against these proposals based on the information provided to them." Notes for editors
