Press release: NHS Employers responds to BMA statement on interview process for junior doctor jobs

20 Dec 2006

Dr Ashley Fraser, NHS Employers' medical director said:

"The period between 28 February and 13 April next year may well be challenging as a small number of consultants from each trust are likely to be involved in interviewing junior doctors for the 18,000 new specialty training posts.  Junior doctors will also be attending up to four interviews during this period.

"However trusts are preparing for this challenge and taking steps to ensure there is cover for both consultants and the junior doctors involved in the interview process.   We have published advice to help them prepare and a detailed guide that outlines exactly what needs to be done during the national recruitment round.  The Department of Health has also issued an interview schedule this week which will help them further with their planning.

"This is the first year of Modernising Medical Careers which represents a significant change to the way junior doctors are recruited and trained.   It is inevitable that there will be a period of transition with so many doctors to move into the new training programmes, but in future years we expect that the impact will be much lower with trusts better acquainted with the process and fewer doctors involved in future recruitment rounds. "
