Press release: NHS Employers response to Trust, Assurance and Safety, The Regulation of Health Professionals in the 21st Century21 Feb 2007 Alastair Henderson, Deputy Director of NHS Employers said: "We welcome this White Paper and its accompanying reports which should improve the quality and safety of the care that patients receive from NHS staff. Crucially, the White Paper properly recognises the importance of local employers in professional regulation and gives them new responsibilities to ensure the continuing competency of their staff. Employers have statutory responsibilities for the quality of services they provide to their patients and the competence of the clinical staff providing those services is fundamental to this. Employers are fully supportive of the White Paper's introduction of regular revalidation for clinical staff which will help them maintain the highest professional standards. We will be working with employers, the professions and the regulators to create an effective revalidation system which is underpinned by strong appraisal processes. There is no doubt that this increased responsibility will present challenges for some organisations in terms of capacity and resource but we will start working with them as early as possible to ensure that they have the processes in place to support the additional work that this brings".
