Press release: NHS Employers' response to NAO report on the consultants' contract19 Apr 2007 NHS Employers deputy director Alastair Henderson said: "The contract was designed to fairly reward those who do the most for the NHS, improve recruitment, clarify each consultant's work through an agreed job plan and control their escalating and in some cases excessive workload. It has achieved these things. Now it is important to make sure the investment made brings benefits for patient care. "NHS Employers has been commissioned by the Department of Health to work with trusts over the next few months and help them to make the most of the contract. The programme of work will cover job planning, performance management, benchmarking and using the contract as a lever to change services. "We know that some trusts have started to use the new contract in innovative and effective ways to deliver real benefits to patients and we plan to share that good practice For example, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust has used the contract to introduce a job plan for an entire consultant team that covers the whole year, taking into account consultants annual leave, and this has led to fewer cancelled patient appointments."
