Press release: NHS Employers response to Pay Negotiating Council meeting27 Apr 2007 NHS Employers today met with Staff Side representatives at the Pay Negotiating Council. Alastair Henderson, Deputy Director of NHS Employers, said: "We listened carefully to the issues raised by the Staff Side about the offer we made to them on 3 March and we understand their concerns. We will be considering what they have told us and discussing this with employers and the UK health departments before making a formal response. "However, we already know the outcome of the Pay Review Body awards and the Government's decision on how they should be implemented this year. In Agenda for Change, we have a pay structure based on the principle of equal pay. It is simply not sustainable to give different levels of pay increases to different staff whose jobs have been evaluated as equal and are on the same pay points. "We do not believe that NHS staff would expect a health care assistant and a clerical worker who are both on, say, Band 3 of Agenda for Change to receive different pay rises. "NHS Employers and the trades unions both recognise that the current system, in which the Review Body and the PNC both have to make awards separately for the same pay structure, is flawed. We are working with the trades unions and UK health departments to see how we can resolve the position." Notes for editorsNHS Employers has made the following offer to the Pay Negotiating Council for England and Wales: * A 1.5 per cent increase on all pay points and high cost area allowances from 1 April 2007 * The remainder of the 2.5 per cent uplift on all pay points and high cost area allowances from 1 November 2007. Staff who have had their award staged will have their pay uplifted by the full amount recommended by the review bodies from 1 November.
