Press release: Response to CSP figures on unemployed graduate physiotherapists

13 Sep 2007

Sian Thomas, deputy director of NHS Employers, which represents NHS organisations on workforce issues, said:

"Many newly qualified staff in the NHS are finding employment quickly, but we know that some, such as physiotherapists, are finding it difficult to find a first post in the current climate and this is something that NHS Employers is taking very seriously.

"We have been working closely with CSP and employers, both in the private and public sector, to find creative solutions to this employment challenge. NHS Employers has produced a checklist of options that employers can take to help new graduates find their first job. These include putting existing staff on accelerated development programmes to free up junior posts; restricting vacancies to newly qualified staff; offering temporary contracts to graduates; and enabling graduates to go straight into a community post by providing them with additional training and support."

Examples of trusts which have taken action to help newly qualified physiotherapists are Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, which has turned two full-time junior posts into four part-time junior posts, after consulting with local graduates; and  Bradford Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which has included community and primary care placements in its junior rotational placements to encourage more juniors to go into community posts full-time as senior physiotherapists, freeing up junior posts.

NHS Employers is also working with CSP to produce a business case on how physiotherapists can help deliver occupational health services and we are also helping to raise awareness among employers about how allied health professionals, such as physiotherapists, can help them meet the 18 week target.

We have also set up talent pools on the NHS Jobs e-recruitment website, which graduates can join and be alerted by email of any jobs in their local area.
