Press release: NHS Employers responds to announcement of SAS contract approval05 Dec 2007
Gill Bellord, head of pay at NHS Employers, which negotiated the new contract with the SAS Committee of the BMA, said: "We are pleased that the proposals we agreed with the BMA have finally been ratified. A new contract for SAS doctors has been long overdue. "The proposals will properly reward and develop this group of doctors, which is so important to the delivery of services in the NHS. They will also help employers better plan and organise services for patients. "The recommendation for transitional introduction of the contract was not part of our original proposals and we acknowledge that some SAS doctors will be disappointed. However it is good news that the waiting of the last few months is over and that the BMA can now give their SAS members the opportunity to vote on the proposals. "We hope that SAS doctors will vote for the contract which will improve their pay and benefits and provide a better career path that is underpinned by personal and professional development."
