Press release: NHS Employers' statement on the BMA's rejection of changes to the General Medical Services contract20 Dec 2007 Dr Barbara Hakin, Chair of NHS Employers' negotiating team, which is negotiating with the General Practitioners Committee of the BMA, said: 'We are very disappointed that the General Practitioners Committee (GPC) has decided not to accept our proposals for changes to the GMS contract. We are offering GPs a good deal which reflects the investment that has been made in general practice over the last few years and responds to the wishes of patients who want swift and convenient access to see their GP. 'We were hoping that GPC would agree to our offer which would, amongst other things, provide extended opening hours in return for 1.5% additional investment in GMS services. We wanted GPs to provide around 3 hours extra appointment time per practice per week to provide greater convenience for patients. 'We feel that this offer is fair to patients, fair to GPs and fair to the public purse which were always the aims of our discussions. We hope that all GPs will have the opportunity to consider the detail of the offer and assess for themselves what we believe to be a good deal for them and for their patients.' Notes for editors
