Press release: NHS Employers' response to announcement of changes to immigration rules.06 Feb 2008
Steve Barnett, director of NHS Employers, which represents NHS organisations on workforce issues, said: "NHS Employers welcomes the announcements made today concerning temporary changes to rules on immigration. Employers will see this as a positive step in addressing the current oversupply of doctors. We have grown the graduate workforce in the UK and now need to maximise opportunities for UK and EEA graduates by giving them priority in the first few years of their postgraduate training. We will be seeking employers' views to feed in formally to the Department of Health consultation on managing applications to the foundation and specialty training programmes from Highly Skilled Migrant migrant doctors with leave to remain in the UK. It is important to have clarity on this issue although we recognise the situation is still dependent on the outcome of the consultation and House of Lords ruling in May. Overseas doctors will always be needed in the NHS and will continue to make a valuable contribution to the provision of patient care." Notes for editors
