Press release: NHS Employers' response to the Department of Health's report on Tooke28 Feb 2008 Alastair Henderson, Acting Director of NHS Employers, which represents trusts on workforce issues, said: 'We welcome this considered response to Sir John Tooke's recommendations. Tooke proposes some major changes to medical training and it is right that the Department takes time to consider carefully those that will have the greatest impact in particular changes to the foundation years and to the length of GP training. 'It is vital that we learn the lesson of the past that radical changes need to be well thought through and to involve discussion with all parties. 'It is important that Tooke's recommendations are closely aligned to the Next Stage Review. Planning for medical training and for the delivery of services to patients are inextricably linked. 'We agree that we need to carefully look at the role of the medical director in terms of local delivery of training and will discuss this issue with the BMA, BAMM and the medical royal colleges. 'We particularly welcome the emphasis on stakeholder engagement and involvement which is vital to the success of any MMC changes and look forward to playing our part both within the Programme Board and more broadly as representatives of the service that both trains and employs the doctors.'
