Press release: NHS Employers responds to health select committee report on MMC08 May 2008 In response to today's Health Select Committee's (HSC) report on the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) programme, David Grantham, Head of Programmes, NHS Employers said: "The report recommends that employers are given a more prominent role in decisions about the future design and implementation of medical training, and the recruitment and selection of doctors in training, which we welcome. "It is important to remember that we are training doctors for jobs in the NHS. Employers are best placed to identify the numbers and types of medical specialists needed to deliver high-quality patient care in modern healthcare settings. "We concur with many of the findings in the report, and stressed similar concerns in our own evidence. It is worth noting, however, that improvements are already being made in some of the areas the Committee highlights; for example, the new SAS contract is currently being implemented. "Over the summer we and all organisations involved will be working hard to ensure that plans for 2009 and beyond meet the needs and expectations of doctors, employers and patients."
