Press release: NHS Employers responds to revalidation report and responsible officer consultation23 Jul 2008 NHS Employers has consistently supported the principle of revalidation for all medical staff and therefore we welcome the announcement today. It is absolutely correct that patients and the public should be assured that doctors, who have a central role in providing care, continue to perform to the appropriate quality standard and we believe that revalidation should provide that assurance. It is important that the local process for revalidation builds on the existing appraisal mechanisms that are currently in place in order to avoid creating an unnecessary burden for both doctors and employers. We look forward to working with the Department of Health, the General Medical Council, employers and the profession on devising and implementing a system that is both effective and practicable, and achieves the shared objectives of supporting doctors and improving the quality of care. In addition, we welcome the publication of the proposals for the implementation of responsible officers and will be consulting on these with employers. Notes for editorsNHS Employers represents trusts in England on workforce issues and helps to ensure that the NHS is a place where people want to work.
