Press release: NHS Employers response to Healthcare Commission staff survey results

NHS Employers' Director Steve Barnett said today:

'In this time of considerable pressure on the health service and on its staff, it is reassuring that this years' staff survey results show a similar picture to last year.

'This result confirms that the NHS is a good place to work and that the investment of employers in improving the working lives of their staff is making a difference.  It is particularly encouraging to see that we still have a high staff satisfaction rate of 3.44 out of 5, even during what is a very testing time for the service.

'But there is no doubt that more needs to be done and the survey gives us a clear indication of the areas that need attention.  In particular, the Healthcare Commission highlights the figures relating to bullying and harassment in the workplace as an area for improvement.  This will be a priority for NHS Employers over the coming year.  I am also concerned to see a drop in the number of staff who have had an appraisal but expect this figure to improve significantly next year as annual appraisals are integral to the new pay structure, Agenda for Change.

'NHS Employers is leading on the work in many of the areas covered by the survey and our work will be shaped by the survey findings.  In particular we are working with the Healthcare Commission to support trusts with interpreting and learning from their results and we will be running a series of joint workshops in the coming weeks.'

Dr Gill Morgan, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said:

'As the staff survey shows, there is still more to do in terms of promoting hand hygiene to staff, patients and their visitors. Infection control is a complex issue and tackling healthcare acquired infections is everybody's business. 

'There are a number of important steps that the NHS is taking to tackle healthcare acquired infections - including strict rules and extra vigilance for hand hygiene of staff, patients and visitors; dedicated infection control teams; better paid and better trained cleaning staff. There is still more to do, but evidence suggests that the changes are having an impact.'
