Press release: NHS Employers' response to GP earnings story18 Apr 2006 In response to claims about GP earnings, Dr Barbara Hakin, chair of NHS Employers negotiating team said: "If there are GPs who are earning sums in the region of £250,000, the numbers will be very small. These GPs are likely to be providing services to large numbers of patients, employing a significant number of staff and essentially running large businesses. The average GP will earn around £100,000. GPs have seen increases in their pay over the last few years but this investment has been necessary to ensure that we are able to build up our primary care services and recruit and retain the GPs that deliver them. The GP contract is driving up the quality of care that patients receive from their practice. For example it has improved care for patients with chronic conditions such as asthma, dementia and depression; it is improving patients' access to GP surgeries and it is linking these improvements directly to patients' experiences of their practices through patient questionnaires."
