A smart meter is a new kind of gas and electricity meter that can digitally send meter readings to energy suppliers. They ensure more accurate energy bills and the portable in-home display gives consumers a better understanding of their energy usage and costs.
By the end of 2020, around 53 million smart meters will be fitted in more than 30 million premises (households and small businesses) across Wales, Scotland and England. The programme is already underway and there are over five million smart meters installed across Great Britain.
The new meters are being installed by energy suppliers at no additional cost.
