Everyone knows that team working is important. However working in a team can sometimes feel difficult and challenging as well as fun and motivating. Team working, like so much of our work, is essentially about relationships and like the best relationships, we have to work really hard at them.

Investing in team work may sometimes seem like a struggle when staff are continually faced with time pressures and new targets to meet. However, if the post-Francis vision of high quality care for every patient is to become a reality, then effective multi-disciplinary team working is essential.

As Professor Michael West highlighted in his July blog for Do OD:

'91 per cent of people in the NHS work in a team but around 50 per cent of NHS staff say their teams don’t have clear objectives, don’t work closely together, or don’t meet regularly to review performance.'

This statistic emphasises the need for us to think differently when reviewing team performance. There is a call for a change in focus and a move towards integrated models of care, breaking down the silo mentalities that many cite as a barrier to effective team working.

The DoOD TEAM toolkit

Our TEAM toolkit takes the most important elements of team working and has turned them into a accessible resource that anyone can use. Use this toolkit when working with your staff to help embrace team working and recognise the contribution it can make to the delivery of compassionate patient care, from committed staff working within a common culture.

What's in the toolkit?

  • Theories and factsheets that can help you work effectively with your team.
  • Evidence demonstrating the importance of team development and good practice in leadership for the delivery of successful outcomes.
  • Application of ideas, including interventions and tools to measure their effectiveness.
  • Motivational links and resources to inspire you, encourage you, and help you learn more about team development.

Is this resource for me?

  • If you work in a team or lead a team, this resource is for you.
  • If you want your team to work better, this resource is for you.
  • If you’re struggling with ideas on how to tackle difficulties in your team, this resource is for you!

"Love this, like you say, there's a wealth of information out there and this excellent resource puts so much together in one place. We offer our teams the opportunity to participate in our team development model, consisting of six half day sessions comprising a team health check, service planning, team roles, MBTI, conflict and action planning. This will be a superb resource to compliment this. Thank you for sharing" (via LinkedIn).
