    Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust

    What we did and why

    The trust has approximately 6,000 staff working across three sites. As part of an organisation-wide drive to achieve financial balance, the trust initially announced a reduction of around 800 posts, across all roles within the organisation.

    Following the statutory 90-day consultation period, the trust briefed all staff on the overall numbers and the selection process before, carrying out a formal selection process to determine which individuals would be selected for redundancy. Once this process had been completed the individuals were served with contractual notice of redundancy.

    How we did it

    To support staff, the trust introduced a number of new initiatives to help them through the process. This included working with colleagues in the local health community to identify potential opportunities for staff, as well as the local government funded agency, Building Health, that helps people get back into work.

    On-site support also included regular staff briefings, guidance notes for staff, a staff enquiry line as well as Job Clubs and redeployment centres:

    Job Clubs offered internet access to NHS Jobs; access to a redeployment co-ordinator; information sessions from the local Job Centre and support for staff on developing interview skills. Redeployment centres were set up to support all staff who had received redundancy notices, giving staff access to vacancies only available to at risk staff; a guidance support pack; training and support from the learning and development team; the option to get advice on handling stress, and sessions run by the local Job Centre on benefits

    Alongside these measures, the trust proactively managed the 'at risk' register, cross referencing with natural staff turnover, which enabled the Trust to reduce redundancies on an on-going basis from the original estimate of 800 to 145 redundancies, which included around 25 voluntary redundancies.
