    What we did and why

Three facilities management staff were seconded for a year as project assessors to form the Facilities Management Staff Development Team. The team are geographically widespread and some do not have access to a computer, making communication challenging.

The staff development team was formed with the hope of improving two-way communication with facilities management staff and ensuring that the important details of the key issues are relayed directly to staff. The team looked at three key issues and how they relate to facilities management staff:

    • Agenda for Change
    • Improving Working Lives (IWL)
    • Knowledge and Skills Framework.

    How we did it

The team briefed staff on the key issues, gathered their views and concerns, and found out what needs to be done and made sure that their views were heard. This was done by holding a series of focus groups.

    The results and next steps

Staff are better informed and there is improved communication between the trust and facilities management staff.

The programme was evaluated using feedback from observers of the team, either within the facilities management staff group or other staff within the trust. The staff side lead has written to the trust stating that the team are an asset to the facilities management staff.
