Pharmaceutical Needs Assessments – a practical guide

This guidance and individual supporting guides explain why Pharmaceutical Needs Assessments (PNAs) are important and how they fit into PCT’s planning cycles.

It sets out a recommended methodology on producing a new PNA or revising an existing one.

It builds on the toolkit published by the National Primary and Care Trust Development Programme (NatPaCT) in 2004. The guidance is not intended to be prescriptive but provides a good framework to support you in deciding how to proceed with the PNA for your area.

If you are starting a new PNA the steps can be followed sequentially. If you are updating an old PNA or drawing from a range of existing documents, you can choose which individual guides are most useful to you.

More information and a breakdown of the individual guides is available in our pharmacy pages.
