The new north west Healthcare Science Trainee Network Board has been set up to develop the trainee aspect of the North West Healthcare Science Network.

What is the board?

The board will support, develop and promote all healthcare science trainees and junior staff from within all healthcare science specialisms across the north west. It has a remit to encourage all trainees to sign up to be a Science Technology Engineering Maths Network (STEMNET) Ambassador, and will be actively involved in planning activities and encouraging input during healthcare science week 2014 (14 - 23 March).

Who are its members?

The board is made up of dedicated healthcare science trainees, all of whom are either currently on the scientist training programme (STP) or practitioner training programme (PTP). The board is supported by Helen Liggett, North West Healthcare Science Workforce Lead, Nick Fowler-Johnson, North West Modernising Scientific Careers implementation programme manager and Lisa Deakin, North West Healthcare Science Network.

What are its successes to date?

The board has been involved in a series of welcome events for both STP and PTP programmes in the region. There are now 12 trainee volunteers representing all stages of training, specialisms and trusts across the north west.

What's coming up?

Current activity includes the development of a dedicated trainee web section on the north west healthcare science website, which will include information about the new board, its members and a forum section.

It is also supporting Introduction to Leadership, a one day programme open to all new north west trainees from February 2014.

Following on from that will be an 'elective and project' trainee event in March 2014, which will include various talks from trainees about their project experience and how they sourced external funding. There will also be a poster event on the day promoting trainee research for MSC projects.

Further information

The chair of the board is Tiffany Daniels, Manchester Royal Infirmary, and can be contacted at tiffany.daniels@cmft.nhs.uk.
