Reports from employers in the NHS appear to suggest that the 12-hour shift system is increasing and may now be the dominant shift system in the NHS. 

In this document, Steven Weeks, policy manager at NHS Employers summarises the key findings of the major new study 12-hour shifts: prevalence, views and impact. Developed by the National Nursing Research Unit, Kings College, this study examines the impact 12-hour shifts have on quality of care and patient experience, alongside nurse opinion on the growth of this shift system.
