Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust (DCHS) developed a responsive workforce team as a way of meeting fluctuations in service demand while finding a better way of using the money spent on agency staff.

Advertised as Band 6 nursing roles, they recruited staff with a range of skills and experience who were engaged in a training programme developed specifically for the role.

In addition to achieving financial savings the initiative has proved to be an effective way of sharing good practice between teams within the trust. Patients moving from in-patient to community-based services are seen as having a better journey with fewer episodes of resubmission being reported.
