Sam and Helen's story - #jabathon 2018
This film details the story of clinical nurse specialist Samantha Robinson from Wales Fertility Institute at Neath Port Talbot Hospital and her identical twin Helen Watts. Helen and Sam have asthma and Helen fell severely ill with flu after she didn’t get her flu jab, unlike her sister Samantha. The film highlights the importance of getting the flu jab, particularly for health and social care professionals.
For #jabathon 2017, we created a series of hidden camera videos with the help of Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The videos remind health and social care staff that flu can be anywhere.
Adele Joicey had a complicated pregnancy and her identical twins were born premature and had breathing problems. Her story is one of many where the care of NHS staff saved her family. However, Adele is conscious that if her sons caught the flu it could prove to be deadly to them, even now. She asks all NHS staff to get their jab since they could, without any symptoms, spread the flu to her children and this would have a huge impact on her family.
How flu spreads
Imagine there was a disease that kills 8000 people a year in England. This disease spreads from sick people to healthy people. But it can also spread from people who have no symptoms like doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers and to the vulnerable patients they come in contact with.
Now imagine this disease was preventable by a vaccine that you had to have only once a year and that takes five minutes of your time.
This disease is the flu. The prevention is the flu jab.
