Staff engagement in the NHS
NHS Employers has launched a new briefing bringing evidence on the benefits of staff engagement together with good practice examples of employer-led initiatives from across the country. Staff engagement was a central theme of Lord Darzi’s NHS Next Stage Review and evidence increasingly points to improved productivity and patient experience when staff feel positively about their employer and a strong sense of engagement with their place of work.

HR directors' poll shows they are positive about the future
NHS Employers today publishes results of a poll of HR directors, showing that the mood is positive about the year ahead. Prior to the NHS Employers annual conference in Birmingham this week, we asked NHS HR directors their thoughts on issues ranging from staff morale to workforce planning and the outlook for HR as a profession. Of 139 responses, 37% said service improvement and redesign was their greatest workforce priority, reflecting the direction set out in Lord Ara Darzi's NHS Next Stage Review and the associated workforce changes. Staff engagement (20%) came next on the list, while recruitment and retention followed at 13%, and 18% said workforce planning was a challenge.
