Equality guidance for the NHS

As the largest employer in Europe, the NHS has a responsibility to take a lead on equality and diversity, not only meeting the legal requirements, but where possible exceeding them. Our 'Navigating Equality and Diversity' document summarises the main equality and diversity guidance and key actions for NHS organisations.

The document:

  • summarises the key equality and diversity workforce requirements
  • provides a quick reference guide on what needs to be done to meet them and likely outcomes
  • signposts you to the organisation that produced the full guidance document

It can be used:

  • for induction of managers and professional staff
  • as a tool for personal development plans
  • to check policy compliance as part of equality impact assessments or equality audits
  • to support the development of equality strategies.

If you are using this document on-line and want to find details on specific guidance quickly, just click on the 'bookmarks' tab on the left hand side of the document and then relevant title.

For details on the legal requirements for NHS organisations, see the eight strands of equality.
